In the last few days, new data has revealed that New Zealand has recorded the
highest ever levels of climate change pollution, while the Climate Change Commission has warned that the government is not doing enough to cut emissions and “there is an
urgent need to strengthen policies and strategies to put Aotearoa New Zealand on track to meet future emissions budgets”.
And that includes our buildings. There is “significant risk” to getting operational emissions down in the time needed and getting fossil fuels like coal out of buildings, the CCC said.
This makes the government’s just released
second emissions reduction plan important for all of us. The plan outlines the actions that the government will take to cut climate pollution between 2026 and 2030, including a short section which says the “government intends to support green building practices in New Zealand and work to establish a clearer picture of this is underway. We’re interested in exploring this topic further as part of ERP2.” A touch of clarity might have been useful – but now we all have a chance to provide that. The ERP is now out for consultation, and
everyone can provide feedback.
FMANZ will be making a submission, and highlighting the key role our sector can and will play. We have the solutions, and we’ll let the government know that. Keep an eye out, as we’ll publish our full submission on our website too. If you have thoughts about what we should include, do drop any of the team a line. Your organisation may want to consider submitting too. You’ve got until 21 August.

Moss and Mould – we are currently going through the wettest months of the year. Perfect conditions for moss and mould growth. Mould is a major cause of paint disfigurement. It destroys the paint's fresh clean appearance, and if left unchecked it shortens the life of the paint film. The most common species are black, but others can be brown or green. Unless removed within a few months of its appearance, mould penetrates the body of the existing film and once firmly established, will grow through subsequent paint coatings, impairing adhesion and ruining the appearance of the paint work. Thoroughly clean down to remove all loosely adhered material. Treat areas of moss or mould infestation with a moss & mould killer, correctly diluted with clean water.
A regular annual maintenance program of washing buildings, as recommended by BRANZ, will not only keep the exterior looking good, but prolong the lifespan of the paint coating.
