I hope you’re gearing up to surf the wave with us at FM Summit Aotearoa 2024 – just 17 days away! We know it's your role to ride the wave and do all you can to make every day better for all New Zealanders. Just like the first New Zealanders who arrived here over the ocean, with sea spray in their hair and the salty scent of the moana in their nostrils. As we embrace the 'Te Rehutai' theme, we’re taking over the Viaduct Event Centre, where the sea spray and salty air will surround us. We’re bringing you an unforgettable experience, ensuring we lead the charge on the cusp of change and tackle the big issues head-on.

For many, the highlight is the evening celebrating our awards finalists. It’s a chance to raise a glass in appreciation of their dedication and contributions to our exceptional profession, and to applaud as the winners are announced. We’re excited for a fantastic night and hope you’ll join us to toast the finalists and unwind. There will be quiet spaces, lively spots, and one of the best bands to help you celebrate. I’ve just returned from spending time with our FMA whānau at their annual Ideaction conference. Many familiar themes were discussed, including AI, sustainability, and Indigenous leadership. It was great to hear from Hon. Ted Baillieu, former State Premier, who emphasised the urgent need to focus on indoor air quality and addressing this growing global issue—also a focus of our Summit.

While I was there, it was great to put the finishing touches on our first FMANZ Study Tour! For those who have already expressed interest, registrations are now live. I’m really excited about this and can’t wait to host a group of amazing Kiwis on a walkabout across the ditch. There are so many hidden surprises and insights in store.

But most importantly, I can’t wait to see you at Summit and our Awards. I’m confident you’ll leave feeling invigorated and energised, ready to keep making a difference.

FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP SUCCESS

Welcome to part 2 of our interview with FMANZ Foundation scholarship recipient Vale Leulu, Facilities Coordinator for Tātaki Auckland Unlimited. Facilities Manager - Otago University

Otago University is seeking a dedicated Facilities Manager for its Property Services Division. The role includes coordinating capital works, procuring services, managing budgets, and data analytics, while developing facilities management plans that support the university's strategic goals. PROPOSED CHANGES TO SAFETY STANDARD

MBIE is proposing to modify a reference to an Australian water heater safety standard (AS 3498) in the Acceptable Solution G12/AS1 to limit the maximum temperature adjustment for a temperature limited water heater (TLWH). This will provide NZ suppliers and installers of instantaneous water heaters more flexibility to comply with NZ hot water delivery temperature safety provisions without the need for setting maximum temperature adjustments in the factory. The change is proposed to take effect on 2 November 2024, with the consultation process having just closed. See more information on the proposed changes here.

BUILDING AMENDMENT BILL

Minister Chris Penk has announced that legislation is on the way to make building more affordable and provide access to a wider variety of building products in New Zealand. The government is introducing the Building (Overseas Building Products, Sta “ndards, and Certification Schemes) Amendment Bill. The new law aims to reduce red tape and make it easier to import high-quality building products. You can read the legislation here.

From November this year, following a 12-month transition period, a new Building Code rule comes into effect around smoke alarm requirements. From this date it will be mandatory for all new homes and substantial renovations to have interconnected smoke alarms as a minimum fire safety system. This means all bedrooms, living spaces, hallways and landings on every level of the home will need to have smoke alarms. The reason they need to be interconnected is if one smoke alarm activates, it will cause all smoke alarms in the home to activate, enabling better protection by alerting occupants to move to a place of safety. Citing performance standard NZS4514:2021, this standard allows for hard-wired or wireless type interconnected smoke alarms, of either 240v mains powered type or 10 yearlong life battery type. It is the landlords and tenants' responsibility for maintaining smoke alarms.
