SUMMIT WARM UP
It was an afternoon filled with spectacular networking and learning as we kicked off our pre-Summit events on Tuesday 24 September. Attendees enjoyed a waterfront walking tour, exploring the maintenance and upkeep requirements of some of Auckland’s iconic buildings like the NZ Maritime Museum and Shed 10, thanks to hosts
Karl Beaufort and
Bruce Jamieson from Tātaki Auckland Unlimited. The Spark Arena FM tour was particularly popular, featuring insights from Head of Property
Matt Milligan about managing the venue's operational demands. Check out some of the photos
here.
Meanwhile, our "Empowering Women in FM – Negotiating Your FM Career Pathway," workshop led by
Alex Hanlon, from Fair Pay Negotiations, provided valuable tools for female members to navigate salary negotiations and career advancement. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive.
On the water, Certified members and Fellows set sail on the Ted Ashby, hosted by Board Chair, Paul Huggins. It was an hour of fun and networking mixed with a little elbow grease as guests helped crew the ship and hoist the sail. You can see some photos
here. The day concluded with a welcome function at the NZ Maritime Museum, supported by Paramount Services, where guests mingled while enjoying music from
David Shanhun, setting an exciting tone for the upcoming days. See some photos
here.
RIDING THE SUMMIT WAVE
We're still riding the high after our biggest ever FM Summit! Over two packed days, we were treated to a sparkling array of inspirational speakers set against the shimmering waters of the mighty Waitematā. If you were there with us, we hope you left feeling invigorated and inspired. If you couldn't be there, read on for some of our top Summit highlights......
Thanks to our amazing MC,
Pio Terei, for setting the tone with his quick-witted humour and boundless energy, which was hotly followed by a burst of positivity, unlocking our minds to the benefits of 'possibilitarian thinking,' courtesy of international keynote speaker and 7-time world drumming champion,
James Laughlin. We're thrilled to have heard from esteemed speakers like
Chris Penk MP, Minister for Building and Construction, who acknowledged the vital role of facilities managers in ensuring buildings perform well. Economist,
Shamubeel Eaqub, highlighted the importance of better indoor air quality, while Distinguished Professor
Lidia Morawska, named one of Time Magazine's most influential people, laid out the science behind improving air quality and the crucial role of facilities managers in making change happen. Read more

SUMMIT ANTHEM ROCKS THE BOAT
It was a tightly fought contest with four songs wading into our shortlist for our Summit Anthem Challenge decider during our opening address on Summit day one. Our MC,
Pio Terei, delighted in pitting our four contenders - Orinoco Flow by Enya, Rock the Boat by Hues Corporation, Sailing Away (All of Us) by various artists and Tangaroa Whakamautai by Maisey Rika - against each other, with delegates voting for their top tune. Despite it being a tight battle,
Rock the Boat was declared our 2024 winning Summit Anthem. It was so good to see people getting in the Summit flow with lots of toe-tapping and shoulder swaying to the catchy beat. Well done to
Kendra Wallace for the suggestion. Kendra has kindly donated her $150 prize to our Summit charity partner, Spirit of Adventure Trust. Thanks to all for the song suggestions and engagement on this one - FMs certainly do love their music!
NEW REPORT HELPS CLEAR THE AIR
We’re excited to see our indoor air quality alliance gaining momentum, urging the government to set and implement improved indoor air quality standards for all public buildings. On the back of our powerful new report ‘Time to Clear the Air: The Economic Benefits of Improving NZ’s Indoor Air Quality,’ released to coincide with FM Summit, dozens of organisations have already added their voice to the cause. Co-authored by Economist
Shamubeel Eaqub and supported by
ActivePure,
Jacksons Engineering and
Tether, the report reveals improving the quality of the air people breathe inside offices and schools would reduce sickness and improve concentration levels so much that it could benefit New Zealand to the tune of $1billion. Read the full background story
here.
We’re grateful to experts like
Distinguished Professor Lidia Morawska and
Shamubeel Eaqub for addressing this crucial issue at Summit. It's also great to see the media embracing this important issue. Check out the latest media coverage; listen to Distinguished Professor Lidia Morowska's Radio NZ, Nine to Noon interview
here, Shamubeel Eaqub’s Radio NZ, Morning Report interview

It also ensures our team can manage everything smoothly. Stay tuned for key dates coming soon!
SIMPLY THE BEST 'FELLOW'
As our organisation continues to grow in both age and scale, the Board identified the need for an award that goes beyond our highest existing honours of Fellow or Certified Fellow, and so, the new Distinguished Fellow accolade was born. Recognising individuals whose contributions extend beyond our current awards, this accolade celebrates lasting impact and legacy, which will inspire future generations. We could not be more delighted to announce that our first-ever Distinguished Fellow award has been granted to someone whose presence is truly integral to FMANZ – our very own
Jonathan Jepson, current CPD and Assessment Manager and FMANZ founding member. Read more

At this year's AGM, a number of service awards were granted. Congratulations to
Stuart Bryant who was presented with a Distinguished Service Award,
Ross Brunton, who was presented with an Outstanding Service Award and to

WELCOME A-BOARD
We’re incredibly grateful to our elected board members who generously volunteer their time to shape FMANZ’s future. At this year’s AGM, we welcomed
Paul Bonini CFMANZ and
Annie Robinson as new Southern Region Board Members, replacing
Anthony van Meer CFMANZ and
Chris Patchett PFMANZ. We thank them both for their outstanding contributions, especially Anthony for his incredible nine years of service.
We also announced the election of
Amanda Collinson PFMANZ and
Alex Hampshire, representing the Central Region.
Bruce Kenning CFFMANZ, after an extraordinary nine years of service, has also stepped down from the Board, with Amanda having previously been co-opted onto the Board.
As we embed our new 2025-2030 strategy, we look forward to continuing this journey with our board, driving innovation and action for FMANZ’s bright future.

Hot on the heels of our new IAQ campaign launch, the FMANZ team recommends watching the 'Campuses, schools and precincts - Driving down energy bills and emissions and improving indoor air quality' webinar. In today's rapidly evolving landscape, building automation has emerged as a pivotal tool in the pursuit of sustainable practices. By seamlessly integrating technologies to monitor and control building systems, such as HVAC, boiler, hot-water, lighting, and indoor air quality, IoT based building automation holds the key to optimising energy use and reducing carbon emissions. Using Waitaki Boys High School as a case study, Michael Welzel of IQnexus will explain how the school turned a corner in its sustainability journey while cutting power bills at the same time. Watch

A WORD FROM OUR SPONSOR
Decorative Paint Systems – Decorative paint is not a waterproofing system. Often, we are asked to provide a paint solution where there are obvious moisture ingress issues creating bags, blisters and paint adhesion failure. No decorative paint system can fix what may be a building design or construction fault. Whilst we are happy to view the property to assess the current coating and substrates, where moisture ingress issues occur, we recommend consulting a suitably qualified Building Engineer prior to any painting works. Look for reputable ‘multi-trade’ contractors who are experienced with moisture issues.
