June has arrived and with it, three major moments we’re incredibly proud to share.

First up, we’re counting down to the Ngā Tohu a FMANZ Awards, returning as a standalone celebration for the first time. The calibre of finalists is phenomenal. These awards shine a light on those quietly shaping our most effective, thriving places. A powerful moment of recognition and advocacy for FM.

And of course, later this year we’re heading to Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington for FM Summit 2025. The theme - Performance | Art, Whakairo ā whare, whakairo ā ngākau - invites us to explore how the craft of shaping our buildings mirrors the shaping of our hearts.

With reflections woven throughout the programme, it’s set to be our most creative and moving Summit yet. Keep an eye out for the full launch later this month. Rounding out the year, our 2025 Inside Facilities Study Tour heads to Melbourne this December. I’ll be joining a small group for an unforgettable few days hosted by Nic Burt from FMA, with an incredible line-up in store.

PROJECTS OF FM - LESSONS IN SUSTAINABILITY

The latest case study in our 'Projects of FM' series, supported by EECA, highlights the positive long-term outcomes that can be achieved when facilities managers have a seat at the design table.

With a bold sustainability vision and a commitment to innovation, AUT’s facilities team has embarked on a journey to transform campus facilities, tackling the complex challenge of retrofitting existing buildings to achieve lower emissions, greater efficiency, and future-ready infrastructure. In doing so, they've raised the bar in sustainable facilities management for the education sector - a move that has positioned AUT as a leader in sustainability across Australasia in recent TEFMA benchmarking. ADVOCACY

EECA - the government body promoting clean energy and energy efficiency - recently asked FMANZ for feedback on investment proposals that they hope will encourage pollution-beating projects.

Overall, we backed their direction and investment models, which we say will be good for New Zealand and good for business. Have a read of our full feedback to EECA here.

SWITCH ON TO THE BIG SWITCH OFF

Don’t forget to check everything’s ready before the big 3G and copper network switch-off later this year - otherwise, you might get caught out! With telcos shutting down 3G by the end of 2025 to focus on faster 4G and 5G networks, we’re hearing plenty of stories about people getting stuck like a Christchurch property owner who just found out their automatic gate system needs a pricey upgrade because it’s still running on 3G. FMANZ has loads of helpful resources to make sure you stay ahead of the game and smoothly navigate the 3G and copper network shutdown. BUILDING SAFETY WAKE-UP CALL

The recent manslaughter charges against three individuals reportedly responsible for maintenance and compliance at Loafers Lodge, following the tragic 2023 fire, serve as a stark reminder for our industry. We echo the calls from NZ Police, Fire and Emergency New Zealand, and the Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment for all building managers and owners to ensure full compliance with safety regulations, including up-to-date evacuation plans, maintained escape routes, and properly functioning emergency systems. WORKSAFE SHAKEUP

As you may have heard, the Government has announced its intention to overhaul WorkSafe, shifting focus from strict enforcement to supporting businesses in managing critical risks through early engagement and clear guidance. Key proposals include clarifying responsibilities, reducing overcompliance, updating safety guidelines, a new funding structure, and a traffic management hotline, easing compliance for small businesses while maintaining safety. Meeting Pods are becoming a more common alternative to fixed meeting rooms as the way we work continues to evolve. However, there are some things you need to be aware of if you are considering installing pods in an existing building space, especially in a fire sprinkler protected building. Note: It is a common misconception that if pods are portable (on wheels) then they don’t need sprinkler protection. When installing meeting pods in a fire sprinkler protected building your compliance could be compromised and will therefore need fire sprinklers installed inside the pod unless the following applies:

The pod is under 1200mm x 1200mm and the minimum clear space between the pod and the building’s sprinkler heads still comply with the NZ Standard.
Sufficient full scale fire testing can be provided.
There is an internationally accepted listing where the pod ceiling is designed to open on detection of a fire.

In all cases, we strongly recommend consulting with your fire protection service provider early in the design stage, to ensure the ongoing compliance of your fire protection systems.
