An exclusive opportunity to explore a very special historic site with archaeological project manager Timothy Moon.

Fort Stony Batter Heritage Site lies at the far eastern end of Waiheke Island within Man o War Station, the John Spencer family farm. The land was compulsorily acquired by the Ministry of Defence in 1940 to construct New Zealand's most secretive Coastal Defence System in response to WWII threat.

A bit more about Fort Stony Batter:
The complex is the largest construction in NZ comprising some 1,000m of subterranean tunnels with 750mm thick walls, chambers, magazine rooms and terrestrial buildings. It was designed to receive direct bombardment, features shockwave deflectors and other innovative construction design.  The Fort is a true tunnel complex as opposed to 'cut and cover' technique. The complex is in near perfect condition, 80 years after construction began.
